A rapidly changing university environment presents a steep learning curve for students new to university. During 2001, the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) undertook a major on-line survey and series of focus groups with first year students. Results showed the majority of students, by the end of semester one, were satisfied and confident users of support services and technologies. Student feedback also showed many students had difficulty getting to this point, having found orientation overwhelming and confusing. Furthermore, a significant portion of students indicated they felt lonely and isolated in the university environment.
